week 14 lab/lecture

                                    Week14 Lab/Lecture

  • Description of what we did in the lab?
    • Greenhouse effect
      • Some solar radiation is reflected by the earth and the atmosphere.
      • Most radiation is absorbed by the Earth's surface and warms it.
      • Infrared radiation is emitted by the Earth's surface.
    • Earth 'blanket' and light
      • certain gases act like a blanket in our atmosphere
    • Greenhouse gas
      • a gas that absorbs and re-emits infrared light.
  • The big question addressed in the lab?
    • Climate Change?
    • Greenhouse gasses?
    • Describe how the molecules interacted with the visible and infrared photons
    • What will happen if we continue to increase CO2?
  • A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.
    • Sources of Natural Variability
      • Solar and volcanic are two dominant natural contributors to global climate changed
    • What is the albedo effect?
    • How does it affect climate?
    • How does the GH effect interact with the albedo effect?
    • Is the albedo effect a positive or negative feedback loop?
    • Albedo Effect
      •  Reflectivity of a surface; how much radiation is reflected vs. absorbed
      • COLOR has a major influence on albedo
      • high albedo means something is more reflective, a low albedo means it is less reflective/will absorb more radiation
    • Snowball Earth
      • What effects does this have on the albedo across the entire planet?
      • How might the planet warm back up during an ice age?

  • Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
  • What did you learn?
    • July 2019 was the hottest month on record since they began record keeping in 1880.
    • Arctic and Antarctic sea ice levels were both at record lows for the month of July.
  • What was most helpful?
    • Clips of showing the ice growing younger and thinner
  • What do you need more information on?
    • Everything

Week 6

Lab Week Six Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I learned more about turtles and what happens after they hatch or not even hatch and what happens to them. I learned that turtles follow the moonlight after they hatch. I also learned that other lights can deter turtles from making it to the ocean because they can get confused.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  In my 5th grade class, we did this same exact lesson, we grew the same plants and then pollinated them with dead bees. I learned more about the cycle of the plant now than I did in 5th grade.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why do turtles follow the light to the ocean??

week 15

Lab Week Fifteen Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I didn't really learn much. I did most of this stuff in highschool so I already knew what was going on. I did enjoy the film canister activity though. It was fun guessing what it was.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  I already knew about the marshmallow experiment. Did this in highschool. It is fun to mess with it and see the marshmallow grow and shrink.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why does the marshmallow grow? I forgot why it happens.

week 13 lab/lecture

Week13 Lab/Lecture Description of what we did in the lab? Weather is day to day.  The climate is the average of weather over thirty years.  The climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.  Goldfinches will eventually go further north because of climate and precipitation. New state bird? Eventually might get Missouris birds?  Is the Loon going to Canada? Wild call.  The world is getting hot, the world is going to shit, people, animals, plants are dying and people are getting sick.  We wrote a very lovely worded email to tedward. \=] The big question addressed in the lab?  How do we know that the Goldfinch is in fanger in Iowa?  What type of data do we have that supports that climate change is happening? A description of what you learned in Thursday's lectu...
