week 13 lab/lecture

                                    Week13 Lab/Lecture

  • Description of what we did in the lab?
    • Weather is day to day.
    • The climate is the average of weather over thirty years.
    • The climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.
    • Goldfinches will eventually go further north because of climate and precipitation. New state bird?
    • Eventually might get Missouris birds?
    • Is the Loon going to Canada? Wild call.
    • The world is getting hot, the world is going to shit, people, animals, plants are dying and people are getting sick.
    • We wrote a very lovely worded email to tedward. \=]
  • The big question addressed in the lab?
    • How do we know that the Goldfinch is in fanger in Iowa?
    • What type of data do we have that supports that climate change is happening?

  • A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.
    • Kim K cares about the planet!
    • Mark Moron is dumb.
    • 1896 global warming was predicted.
    • Carbon Dioxide is a greenhouse gas. New fact!
    • L.O.W.E.R. Near Water
      • Latitude
        • Places closer to the north and south poles= colder temperature
        • places near the equator have warmer temperatures.
      • Ocean currents
        • The temperature of an ocean current affects the temperature of air that passes over it.
      • Wind & Air Masses
        • An air mass is a large volume of air that takes on the climatic conditions of the area where it is formed.
      • Elevation
        • The higher in altitude, the colder in temperature.
        • As the air expands, it cools.
        • As the air rises, it expands because of the lower air pressure.
      • Relief
        • precipitation is created when an air mass rises to cross a mountain barrier.
        • An adiabatic process is one in which no heat is gained or lost by the system.
      • Near Water
        • In the summer the water acts like an air conditioner to keep the air temperature cool.
        • In the winter water acts like a heater to keep the temperatures from getting too cold.
        • Continental climate (away from water)
        • Maritime climate (closer to water)
    • Albedo Effect- Cold sinks convictions currents.
    • Driving question-
      • How does climate change affect the sea level?
    • Paris Agreement
      • An international treaty on climate change was created to limit global warming to a change of 2 degrees Celsius we have already warmed 1 degree Celsius since pre-industrial times
      • includes 195 nations that meet together every 5 years to discuss progress toward goals
      • Adopted on December 12, 2015
    • California owns Colorado Waters.

  • Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
  • What did you learn?
    • greenhouse gases are made up of 4 gasses.
  • What was most helpful?
    • The video that NASA created talks about the world's gas problem.
  • What do you need more information on?
    • What happens with the energy being radiated back into space?
  • What questions/concerns/comments do you have?
    • How did they find out what gases were in our atmosphere and in greenhouse gases?

    Week 6

Lab Week Six Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I learned more about turtles and what happens after they hatch or not even hatch and what happens to them. I learned that turtles follow the moonlight after they hatch. I also learned that other lights can deter turtles from making it to the ocean because they can get confused.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  In my 5th grade class, we did this same exact lesson, we grew the same plants and then pollinated them with dead bees. I learned more about the cycle of the plant now than I did in 5th grade.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why do turtles follow the light to the ocean??

    week 15

Lab Week Fifteen Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I didn't really learn much. I did most of this stuff in highschool so I already knew what was going on. I did enjoy the film canister activity though. It was fun guessing what it was.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  I already knew about the marshmallow experiment. Did this in highschool. It is fun to mess with it and see the marshmallow grow and shrink.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why does the marshmallow grow? I forgot why it happens.
