Week 7 Lab/Lecture

                                               Week 7 Lab/Lecture

  • Description of what we did in the lab?
    • We created a model of half of the solar system in the lab. The model consisted of the sun, 4 inner planets, and the moon. We used a whiteboard for our sun, we just drew a giant circle. The four inner planets and the moon were made out of play dough. We placed them after we did calculations to place them at the correct distance from each other to replicate the solar system.
  • The big question addressed in the lab?
    • The big question we talked about in lab was 'How big is the Solar System?' And my oh my the solar system is HUGE.
  • A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture.
    • In Thursday's lecture, we discussed the moon. We discussed to origin of the moon and how it orbits. The moon rotates as it orbits. The side of the moon that has the dark spots always faces Earth which tells us that it does rotate. We learned how the moon is the reason the earth is tilted because years and years ago the moon crashed into the earth and tilted it. I never knew it was the fault of the moon we are tilted, which is such a crazy concept to me.
  • Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
  • What did you learn?
    • I learned that the planets that are rocky are smaller in size compared to gas planets. The theory for that is when the Sun turned on it became a star and caused the gas clouds to blow away and the rocket planets were left with a smaller solid planet. The. gas planets are farther from the sun.
  • What was most helpful?
    • All of the diagrams from the textbook reading were helpful because they showed us models of the planets and helped us truly get a better idea of the size of planets. The size comparisons of the planets are crazy to me.
  • What do you need more information on?
    • I want to know more about the creation of all the other planets and if there are other origin stories for them.
  • What questions/concerns/comments do you have?
    • Are there other origin stories about the other planets?

Week 6

Lab Week Six Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I learned more about turtles and what happens after they hatch or not even hatch and what happens to them. I learned that turtles follow the moonlight after they hatch. I also learned that other lights can deter turtles from making it to the ocean because they can get confused.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  In my 5th grade class, we did this same exact lesson, we grew the same plants and then pollinated them with dead bees. I learned more about the cycle of the plant now than I did in 5th grade.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why do turtles follow the light to the ocean??

week 15

Lab Week Fifteen Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I didn't really learn much. I did most of this stuff in highschool so I already knew what was going on. I did enjoy the film canister activity though. It was fun guessing what it was.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  I already knew about the marshmallow experiment. Did this in highschool. It is fun to mess with it and see the marshmallow grow and shrink.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why does the marshmallow grow? I forgot why it happens.

week 13 lab/lecture

Week13 Lab/Lecture Description of what we did in the lab? Weather is day to day.  The climate is the average of weather over thirty years.  The climate is what you expect. Weather is what you get.  Goldfinches will eventually go further north because of climate and precipitation. New state bird? Eventually might get Missouris birds?  Is the Loon going to Canada? Wild call.  The world is getting hot, the world is going to shit, people, animals, plants are dying and people are getting sick.  We wrote a very lovely worded email to tedward. \=] The big question addressed in the lab?  How do we know that the Goldfinch is in fanger in Iowa?  What type of data do we have that supports that climate change is happening? A description of what you learned in Thursday's lectu...
