Lab Week One

Focus Questions: 

The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions? 


1. What did you learn this week? 

This week during lab we discussed as a whole getting to know each other, our future classroom designs, and what we knew about science standards (NGSS). We also discussed what and how students should learn during science time. That discussion led to us talking and exploring the NGSS website. 

2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? 

I already knew that every state has its own standards, and I have I gone through Iowa's standards a lot. I did not know that the NGSS has its own mold for how it is being used across the US. I understand now that there is a three-dimensional mold to it. 

3. What are new or remaining questions? 

One question I have from this week is how do I really make sure I am incorporating the three-dimension in my lessons.

    Hi Kallea! I really enjoyed reading your post. I have similar background knowledge to you in regard to the NGSS. I knew each state had specific requirements, but I did not know what the NGSS was. I think it seems like a wonderful thing and I am excited to learn more! I am also curious as to how I can best incorporate the three-dimensional mold into my teaching in order to best accommodate my students in learning their science best. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Kallea! I enjoyed reading your post and seeing what you had to share. As the comment above, I also have a similar background with NGSS. I think you had some really nice things to share. As for the last section of your post, I would be really interested in seeing how you choose to incorporate the three dimensions model in your future lessons, looks good!

What did you learn this week?  This week I learned more about turtles and what happens after they hatch or not even hatch and what happens to them. I learned that turtles follow the moonlight after they hatch. I also learned that other lights can deter turtles from making it to the ocean because they can get confused.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  In my 5th grade class, we did this same exact lesson, we grew the same plants and then pollinated them with dead bees. I learned more about the cycle of the plant now than I did in 5th grade.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  Why do turtles follow the light to the ocean??

  Lab Week Eight Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  I learned about the pairing in genes and about how you can tell if there is a alter in it just by one letter.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  I have already learned about the letter pairing in genes, I learned about it in my high school years. I learned more about those things in this week's lab.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  I wonder which set of genes were altered in my DNA that created a birth defect in me.

Week 7

    Lab Week Seven Focus Questions:  The three questions I have chosen to focus on from this week's lab were; What did you learn this week? Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew? and What are new or remaining questions?  1. What did you learn this week?  This week I missed lab because I was ill but I was able to retrieve this week's lab slides. Since I can only go off what I retrieved I learned about how DNA goes into protein from the video we watched. I also learned about what goes into DNA, protein, and the process.  2. Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?  In high school, we did the baby experiment where we flipped a coin to determine what the baby would look like so I am well versed on that. I think it is a good experiment for middle-aged kids because it helps them understand the idea of how genetics works.  3. What are new or remaining questions?  A question I have would have to be ...
